When I was living in Africa I could only get palm olein oil which was sold locally as a cooking oil. (Well actually I could get unrefined palm oil but I didn't want the red color so I rarely used it). It worked reasonably well in soap making but I am just a hobbyist soap maker.

Hi! I'm new to the forum. I made a search and this is the only thread that came up with palm olein oil. I didn't know if it's OK to bring back this old thread or open a new one about this.

I will make my first batch of soap this weekend. I've been gathering my materials. I'm planning on making an olive oil batch and also I'd like to make an olive + palm + coconut oil batch because those are the oils available in this neck of the woods.

I've got questions regarding the palm oil. I can't find any liquid oil listed as PALM OIL per se. I only find lots of Palm Olein Oil which is used to fry in the food industry. It's a pale yellow oil and they sell it in gallons and liters and it's very available.

This is the only place in the whole world wide web where I've read of someone that has made soap with Palm Olein Oil. So I was wondering what SAP Value should I use? Is there a recomended percentage of palm olein to use?
I've read that palm olein oil has a high iodine value, so should I be worried that the soap could go rancid?

Thank you in advance for anyone who helps me. :)

Hi iheartsoap

Did you ever make soap with the Palm Olein oil and if so how did it turn out? Also how did you go about calculating it in recipes. Thanks

SAP value of regular palm is 190 - 205. I would make a small batch and use this value for your palm olein oil. I wouldn't use sesame oil. It won't add a pleasant scent to your soap.

I've just ordered some Palm Olein as my supplier has some @ half price. I was advised by a soapmaker, who is part of a group I am in, that she has been using olein since she started soaping 10 years ago (she sells), and she loves it. My supplier also soaped with it and said it was fantastic. They both advised me to enter it as standard palm oil on soap calc.

Mine will arrive on Tuesday - Ill give it a go and let and post how it soaps.

I soaped with Palm Olein the other day. I did two exact batches the only difference being - one had olein one had regular palm. I much prefer the regular palm. The olien is not as creamy and the texture is obvious when soaping. Its also quite a greeny/yellow colour which TD doesnt seem to whiten.

And it smells! I dont know if this is right or not? Im a bit concerned about it. Its a really fatty smell almost like canola, I can still smell it after Ive added my lye. I have fragranced and cant smell the oil through that, but I am worried that it will come through latter. It reminds me of the smell of my first high percentage sunflower soap when it went rancid.

i brought 5 kgs of the stuff

Oh no, I bought some too from the same supplier but haven't tried mine yet. Am hoping to make a batch this weekend all things being equal.

Good luck then busybee, might be ok for you, let me know what you think.

I made 2 more batches today. Ive just cut one and its got really weird steric type bits. As did my one yesterday. I have another in the mold, will post how that one turns out.

Hi soapbuddy,

I soap at 110 deg. However I just cut my other bar and it is beautiful! So Im might have to take my previous comment back, Id say there were other contributing factors to my steric batch (I was having trouble with Gremlins for a few days)

This most recent one is a soap that I do often, same recipe and same FO. It definately has a different texture, its almost waxy, but I kinda like it, it was so much easier to cut.

My main concern is the smell - do you think this is anything to worry about?
