I have an aloe vera plant (well, several of them) and I want to know the best way to extract the liquid so I can add it to my soaps and lip balms. Thanks so much!

I know you can put the leaf in a blender and add it to soap, or scrape the gel and use it in soap, but I don't know about adding fresh aloe to a lip product since it tastes awful! LOL

I would not add it to a lip balm. You would need an emulsifier AND a lip safe preservative.

Unless you use a powder, it does not do well in lip balm, as it does require and emulsifier and a preservative, as SB said. So unless you want to try and dehydrate it.......too much trouble if you as me. It does make a great addition in your soap though!

Ok, so I definitely should have clarified (maybe even put this in the M&P forum), I am using it in M & P soap. Can I use fresh aloe in M &P?

Yes and contrary to what many people believe, mold does not mean that the product is fresh. I'm not sure why anyone thinks that, but they do.

From a web site:
"Gardener's Hand Cream
A very rich cream for hard working hands. Not just gardeners but mechanics, nurses - anyone who's hands get a hard time, or just have dry skin. It acts as a barrier cream and is a restorative. Beeswax, lampolin, sunflower and almond oils, calendula, comfrey, chamomile, spring water. Lightly scented with neroli oil. Comes with a waxy layer on top to stop it going mouldy. Before use remove the wax with the tip of a knife or spoon. If in time it does go mouldy you can wipe away the mould with a tissue and carry on using it."
peasant evolution.co.uk I'm not going to make this a link because I'm not going to give them that satisfaction.

I was shocked the first time I'd heard about people thinking that if it was capable of getting mold then that meant it was fresh. I don't know where anyone first got that idea. Fresh food isn't moldy, so I don't know why people have applied that thinking to other things.

I saw that Gardeners Hand Cream thing somewhere else, too. That's just so gross and incredibly reckless.
