I had changed up my recipe on my lotion bars, trying to incorporate some new stuff I had purchased. I added dimithicone @3% and ipm @2%. I upped my vitamin e to 2%. From what I understood both of these should have been able to mix with my formula. I noticed in the pot, after turning it off and adding the dimithicone it looked like part of the ingredients weren't mixing. I could actually see it in the melted ingredients. I decided to pour it into my molds. When they cooled I noticed what I could best describe as a film of something on top. I popped them out of the molds. Most of them were okay, sans the film, but several of them had what im guessing is the same as the film on top, but in big quantities, where it was dripping out of the bars. I remelted as I thought maybe I had done something wrong, poured, cooled and the exact same thing happened. Am I using the two new products incorrectly? Is maybe my higher vitamin e to blame? I had wanted to add some slip to the bars and a little less greasiness.

It sounds like you may need to use an emulsifyer ,does the residue feel slippery like dimethacone,it's possible it is not incorporating into the rest of the ingred. because of no emulsifyer. snowdrift farm has a great blog on silicone's and how to get them to work for your formula. hope this helps.

I do not use dimethecone at all, but from what I have studied, I can tell you that it is an emollient. Some of it needs to be mixed/activated before you use it, some some shaken. So, if you are sure you followed the manufacturers directions for using, then it could be the percentage that you used, or the temperature. Dimethicone acts differently at different temperatures. At high temperatures it acts like a viscous liquid, similar to honey. But at low temperatures it acts more like an elastic solid, similar to rubber. It is in fact, what is used to make silly putty. If you dont think that there is anything wrong with your percentage or the temperature, and you don't get an answer here, you may want to get in touch with the manufacturer or the vendor and ask them what the issue may be. In all likelihood, one of them should be able to help you, in a more knowledgeable way.

Would I need an emulsifier for an all oil based product? I've made this before without the dimithicone and can take it out no problem, I just had thought it's be nice to help with that "grip" you get with lotion bars, make it glide a little easier.

Lavender I dont completely understand what you mean when you say activate it. Like stir it up vigorously or shake the bottle real well? There were no manufactureres directions as far as lotion bar use, but I used it under the max percentage stated on their website and added while the mix was still warm and liquid per what I understand about dimithicone. Ill contact the manufacturer like you suggested.

Lavenderlady is right you don't need this ingredient but if your like me and want to find out how a product you are using will react in different formulations just research online I would start with what dimethicone is most soluable in water based or oil based formulas and if you need an emulsifyer for some occasions.emailing the company is the best thing to do. good luck

Thanks foe all your help. I researched it and from what I understood it should totally work in the lotion bar. I'm wondering if it's something else, I dunno. I sent off an email to the supplier and hoping they can help me figure it out. I'd really like to include it but will take it out if it isn't gonna work. The ipm works great but almost too great! I kinda like the greasiness of a lotion bar, but thats just me. Fun learning about all the neat products you can use to formulate basic lotions and stuff
