Teach Soap

I always melt my oils aand butters in the microwave just like I do m/p soap. In any recipe I read for lip gloss or body butters ect they always
say in double boiler is there any reason I should not melt oils wax or butters in microwave?

Maybe because in a double boiler they melt slower with less chance of overheating?

It's possible to do them in a microwave, just make sure to only do 30 second bursts at a time, and to stir completely after each time. Sometimes just stirring will melt stubborn pieces, and it doesn't need extra time in the microwave. I do all of mine in the microwave, as it's easier and quicker for me with kids and a special needs grandma at home:)

Stove top is easier to control heat.

Microwave is quicker but can be hotter if you go too long & don't stir.

My preferred method is a crockpot. I have a 3 pot one (it's actually 3 different pots that hold about 32oz ea) that I can set the individual temperatures on (gotta love the digital age). It takes longer, you do still have to stir & watch the temps but I find that it allows me to do multiple things at a time. I do so love my multitasking.

Thanks everyone. I do only 30 seconds at a time. I guess if things are not getting grainy Im ok. The crockpot is a good idea, because I have several small ones that I dont really use anymore.

You can melt anything in the microwave but beeswax--it gets too hot and may shatter the glass--and shea butter, which doesn't react well to being overheated. Add it to the already melted waxes and oils and let the residual heat melt the shea butter. I don't know of anything else specifically that could be a problem in the microwave.
