Super Soaper was kind enough to help me come up with a gentle goat's milk soap recipe. I have read that milk soap recipes are prone to overheating so I have a few questions if someone would be kind enough to offer some help:

Should I freeze the goat's milk into cubes?
Should I skip gelling this soap in the oven?
Should I leave the lid off my wooden mold and not cover it with towels?
Would a silicone mold possibly work better than a wooden mold for milk recipes since there is not as much insulation?
Any other tips for a milk soap first-timer?

Thanks and Happy Friday! 8)

I also want to try a GM soap but have to use the canned evaporated GM. Does it need to be diluted or do you use it full strength right from the can?

Oh my. That's what I used and I just now finished making mine. It didn't even occur to me that it might need to be diluted

And sugar will make it overheat? Do most people not use canned goat's milk? Is fresh goat's milk hard to find?

I will usually put my milk soaps in the fridge. I buy fresh goats milk at the local walmart. Since I do not use all of it at one time, I freeze it in icecube trays and then transfer to a ziplock baggie.

That sounds like a great idea. Is it in the cooler with all the regular milk?

I love that guy. he taught me to make them and i did the exact same thing and did not mix the can of goat milk with water first and the soap still did turn out ok. i put mine in the oven to and it did great. supersoaps told me that because of all the fats that it might cut down the lather but i could not tell the difference. it turned out very nice. he gave me a bunch of pudding cups that you buy at the grocery to pour my goat milk in and then freeze them. if you want i can call him because i have his phone number because i think he went to chicago to see the game.

Well I finished unmolding my first loaf of goat's milk soap this morning and, so far, all looks well.

I put the loaf in the freezer for 30 minutes when I first poured it last night. Then I pulled it out of the freezer and popped it into the refrigerator for 2 hours. I pulled it out of the fridge before I went to bed and sat it on the counter, uncovered, until this morning.

I used my new silicone loaf mold to make this batch () and I was happy to see there was no bowing in this mold and the soap came out of it easily. I also finally got a miter box and used that to slice the soaps. These slices came out far more even than my previous pathetic attempts at slicing soap :P

I did not color this soap but did use a very small amount of oatmeal and honey fragrance. I never did smell an ammonia smell when I was making the soap, as some people warned me about. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing.

So I guess I'll have to wait a while to see how well (or not) this goat's milk soap works and whether or not it has much lather. Thanks to everyone for helping to walk me through this for the first time.

that is how supersoaps taught me to do it for gel. so i do that for every batch and they all turned out ok. i checked my stats before replying to you and my partner & me have made over 80 batches of soap so far and we put each in the oven even the goats milk ones and none of them ever overheated. we just always follow supersoaps instructions.

Thanks for the info. I'll try to find refrigerated GM instead of canned. Don't think I've seen it at walmart but will look on my next trip.
