I'm curious as to why most soap instructions say to add fragrance at trace. Does adding fragrance sooner than that cause problems reaching trace?

No not at all. I think it's more because you never know what a new FO is going to do (accelerate trace, cause ricing, etc) It also allows new soapers to get a feel for trace without a FO changing the results. I always add my FO to my oils before adding my lye/water unless I'm leaving some unscented.

Thanks for clearing that up. I have read so much soaping material that my head is swimming and I could have sworn that someone told me weeks ago that they added their FO to their oil before adding the lye water solution. So I started doing that, then I saw another article about adding FO after trace so I started worrying I was doing it wrong and that I was going to have problems with the soap I already made.

I always add my fragrance to the cooled of oils. I keep good notes, so if I know that that fragrance accelerates trace, I add some lecithin to slow it down.
