I have a recipe that calls for 8.5 oz Lard, 3.8 oz Olive Oil, 3.3 oz Palm Oil, and .5 Castor Oil. How will a soap without any coconut oil turn out? I've never made anything yet that didn't have at least SOME coconut oil in it.

Thanks!

Wow! That's a lot of numbers. I was looking more for a 'It's fine to make soap without any coconut oil' or 'You can NOT make good soap without coconut oil' answer :P

But since you've supplied this info, I'll look through it and see EXACTLY what kind of soap I'll have. Thanks for your help! 8)

I never tried making soap without coconut oil, I do not use lard and never use more than 18% coconut oil, I have never made soap with palm oil before last week and do not think I will again, too hard to find here, have to order it and not really worth it in my opinion. Please let me know how the no coconut oil soap turns out, would love to know if it is more mild. Thanks! :P

I have a favorite recipe that is castor oil, cocoa butter, sunflower oil, soybean oil. lard and coconut oil OR palm oil. I like the soap with either oil.

The reason I posted this is because soapcalc will tell you exactly whats going on with your recipe. If you look, you will see that your soap is conditioning, and a bit creamy, but not much else. I've mentioned before how fun it is to play around with that site, and it is. The best part is, if you don't know what something means, just hold your mouse over it and it will either tell you to "click here for more info" or tell you the info.

Best of luck,
Brandy

You can make soap without coconut but will loose certain qualities. There are time when I sub it out for babasu oil and when I make soap for children there is 90% olive and no coconut - that one gets great reviews from family and friends. Since I find coconut oil a little drying on my skin, will limit it to 20% or less, just like Selena.

So does that mean my 'No Coconut' soap won't lather very well?

I really need to get over my fear of numbers. I need to become ONE with the numbers. The numbers are my friends . . .

Coconut will add some bubbles, so does castor but by my calculations you only have 3.1% of castor in your receipe. Have you used soap calc yet? If you want to play around with the percentages it is real easy with that program, and it's free.

So, if you look at the range(first set of numbers), and you look at your numbers(third number in the group), you will NOT get a bubbly bar, or a cleansing bar and it'll be a pretty soft bar. If the cleansing range is 12- 22, and you bar is 1, it won't clean very well. And if you look at the "bubbly" the range is 14-46 and your number is 4, not so many bubbly and the "hardness" is 29-54 and your bar is a 36, that means pretty soft.

If it were me, I wouldn't use this recipe. www.soapcalc.net is a great place to play around with recipes.

I never make soap even an old tried and true recipe without putting it in soap calc and printing out the page.

Ok ladies, checked out SoapCalc, first time hearing about it, and got a little confused on the website. I didn't see where the ratios were to figure out if my bars fell in the right bracket for each quality of the soap. Could someone please maybe direct me so I know? Thank you!! :)

WOW It is almost midnight and I am still playing with soapcal for the first time. Have I ever been off base!! I am throwing out 1/2 the recipes I thought I liked. I hope to end up with one recipe I make most of the time and one recipe that is kind of speciality luxury bar.
