Is it o.k. to just lable the soaps with whatever the name of the fragrance is that was used or muts I try to be clever & make up names for the soaps & then just keep a log of what fragrance was used?
it seems to be a no brainer to just use the names of whatever fragrance was used & that also tells people kinda what it smells like eg : oatmeal & Honey, Juniper Sage ect .... and in the discription of the smell is it o.k to use a similar or the same discription as what is used from where you buy the fragrance?

Some of mine have the same fragrance names and some of them don't. It depends on the name of the fragrance and how I like (or don't like) the name.

I usually use the names of the fragrances, but sometimes add a little something to it. I have things like "Get up and go" coffee soap, stuff like that. You should check out tartchef's etsy page. She is Paintbox Soapworks, she has some of the coolest names for her products. Things like "The Queen is Dead" and "Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground" stuff like that. She's got some really cool names for her line.

So, I guess to answer your question, you can go either way. Find something that works for you and have fun with it :)

Most of the time I like to make up my own names... but my names are fairly conservative compared to others. Just recently I could not think of a name for the black cherry and vanilla soap I make so I ran a contest at work with the winner getting a bar of soap. They do good work! I ended up combining two of my favorite suggestions and it was called 'Blossom mud bath'. And everyone had some fun being creative. I do not sell but I have heard of vendors using the discription that comes with the fragrance. IMHO I think it would be wrong to use a discription of a FO from another vendor.

Oh geez, Brandy  Thank you so much for your kind words!

I find I often have the name for a blend before I even start thinking of notes... I use song titles a lot, as they aren't copyrightable & tend to be pretty evocative, but I also cull ideas from literature & poetry, children's books, mythology, recipes, films, history... pretty much anything I can get my hands on!

I am probably in the minority in that I don't feel any obligation to include the notes in my scent names - I sell almost exclusively on Etsy, where I have a full screen in which to prattle on about the scent description, so having it in the name specifically doesn't feel as necessary somehow. I just try to capture the feel or color of the scent...

In terms of using descriptions straight from the FO supplier, I know BB & WSP both encourage it - and if you're using it straight from the bottle, there's something to be said for letting Anne Marie & Debbie do the work for you ;) (Lifting a description from another soapmaker, on the other hand, is decidedly bad karma  Just sayin'. )

I make up names for the scents I use. Like tartchef I gravitate towards songs, movies, books etc. Customers tell me that they love the names. I was amazed at what scents started selling more after I changed the name. I changed Amber Romance to Dirty Housewife (which I thought of while watching Stepford Wives) and sales have tripled with that scent. I changed orange to Afternoon Delight and suddenly people love the way it smells. :?:
When creating the description, I usually look at the description from my supplier, then reword it to how I like it.
