Teach Soap

Just curious, does anyone but me not use a ph buffer or adjuster when making liquid soaps and shampoos? I have never had a problem with my ph so unless I want to thicken a batch I don’t use anything. Just wanted to know if I am alone in this

I don't use a buffer. I would be apprehensive of using too much and have the LS break back down into oils and liquid lye.

I superlye at 2% and use borax (sodium borate) to buffer the ph. I use as little as possible because I think if used in excess it would make your soap drying. I know many use borax to thicken or salt and they are both cheap but I am not so sure about what good they would do for your skin or hair. Also if I am right borax will only bring your ph down to a level around 9.2 or something like that. I tested this once a long time ago with my ph meter and can't remember the numbers right now.

I am a beer brewer and have a chemical that I add 1 T. to 5 gal. of water and it puts the water at a perfect 5.2ph, perfect for many beer types. I think that is amazing.

Thank you both, many liquid soap books state it is a must to use a ph buffer/adjuster and just never did and thought I would see what you all thought.
