I have used the 3.75 gal palm oil from Wholesale Supplies for years. Even when the bucket arrives solid, I still stir it. In my case I use a paint stick or I have a very long slotted stainless steel spoon. In any weather, you really don't know what state it has been in during shipping. So to be on the safe side, I stir every new bucket. I don't repackage but I do stir again each time I start soaping. This has worked for me. Had to do it after learning the hard way about the settled to the bottom stearic acid.

Ok, got a newbie question...since I don't want to pay the shipping charges for pounds of oil, I called a friend of mine who owns a restaurant and asked her to order palm oil for me. I told her it might be listed as "ghee"....am I right about this? And since this will be from a restaurant wholesaler, do I need to melt/mix it before soaping or no?

Thanks!! I just asked yesterday, so nothing has been ordered yet. The reason I mentioned ghee is because of this note from millersoap.com...
"I found coconut and palm oil in the Arab grocery store near me. I live in Metro Detroit, so there is a large Arab population. These little stores are jam-packed...skinny little aisles with stuff stacked from floor to ceiling! If you have trouble finding the oils, just ask....they are so helpful and it's really just a pleasure to shop there. Look for vegetable ghee -- which is the palm oil. The coconut isn't labeled so obviously, but just read the list of ingredients. =)"

I'll also be checking out the local Middle Eastern grocery this weekend, LOL! I checked with all the local Asian grocery stores already to no avail...

I will also ask my foodie friend about organic vegetable shortening based on this millersoap.com post...
"I found palm oil at a local store called WHOLE FOODS. It's kinds a health food grocery store. The palm oil was labeled organic veg. shortening, but it was 100% un-hydrogenated palm oil. It's a nice white...unlike some of the other palm oils I've received that were a opaque orange color"

Sooo, if my friend can order the un-hydrogenated palm oil for me, do I need to melt it all when I get it and then parcel it out for future use? And should I try to get this instead of the vegetable ghee that was mentioned? If the veg ghee is OK, do I need to do the same with the melting?

Depending where you live, if you get the the un-hydrogenated palm oil and it's a liquid, you will need to stir it as it cools and becomes solid again. I would get this instead of ghee. Ghee would make a very soft soap as the SAP value is different from palm oil.
