I was making bath fizzies and in this batch I felt like I added enough witch hazel , in fact almost too much where some started to grow "pimples" however, i feel that these crumbled apart and are more brittle. do you know what I did wrong, or is that just the nature of bath fzzies? Thanks! :P

What recipe did you use?

I add kaolin clay of about 2-5% of my total weight of dry ingredients to my recipe and my fizzies are so hard I never have that problem. I actually made some jumbo sized bath bombs last week. They were the 2 1/2 inch size. Anyway, after I packaged them, I was carrying them to put away and I accidently dropped one on the kitchen floor. It landed solid and hard! I thought oh poot! That one's a goner! But when I picked it up, it didnt have even the tiniest crack. I thought to myself, WOW, no way! Kaolin really does make a difference. Just be sure to sift it in with your other dry ingredients so it mixes well.

As far as the witch hazel goes, if you are adding any oils or other "wet" ingredients, you may not need to use witch hazel at all. If you do use oils and such, adding wh can actually make them too wet. Which if you are getting dimples, it sounds like that might be the cause of both the dimples and the brittleness. You recipe only needs to be just moist enough to hold together when you squeeze some in your hands. You can, at your discretion, still spritz with wh, once they are unmolded. Experiment with it and without it and see which works for you.

I don't know what consistency your mixture is, but when I make mine, the texture is like barely damp sand.

I usually just use the white kaolin clay, but I suppose you could use colored clays, depending on your desired color outcome
