I just made my first batch of soap yesterday, and I'm afraid I messed some things up.. but I could really use some feedback from more experienced soap makers such as yourselves
I did a small batch to start out with figuring I might mess it up, but here's my recipe:
4.5 oz coconut oil
9.5 oz olive oil
2 oz castor oil
loose leaf tea added at trace
It was superfatted at 5%. I started by combining the lye and water and melting/heating the oils to about 110 like the recipe said. Then my problems started. I accidentally let the lye solution cool too long, and I couldn't find anywhere what to do or if that was okay or not. The lye got down to about 85-90, and I couldn't find if it was safe to reheat a lye solution, or if so what the best way to do it was. All I could find is that they should be about the same temperature, so I let the oil cool down to about 90-95 when I added them together.
I tried to stir it by hand (I purchased a stick blender but my roommate found one for cheaper at a thrift store, so I was going to stir this one by hand, return the one I got and buy the cheaper one), but an hour and a half later I hadn't reached a trace and my arm was cramping, so I ended up using it. Halfway through the temperature of the soap had gotten down to 80, which I thought was probably to low so I put it on the stove on low low low just to keep it around 100 while I stirred.
I finally got tired of stirring and broke out the stick blender (taking it off the stove first), and it reached trace very quickly, like I accidentally blended until it was thick pudding texture. So I added the loose leaf tea and tried to spread it into the mold. When I spread it I saw several moderately sized clumps that I tried to break apart with a spatula, I poured it into the mold anyway and left it for almost 24 hours now. I just wasn't sure if this soap is going to be safe to use, and if I did something obviously wrong to make something clump. The lye was very well dissolved before I poured it in, and I didn't use any FOs or EOs that would clump.
Do I need to rebatch? Would rebatching even save the soap? Did I do something obviously wrong that I can avoid next time?
Thanks for your feedback!
