If you are referring to LabColors the brand then yes it is FD&C but I'm not sure if that's what you are referring to for sure b/c there is no glycerin in LabColors, it's just super concentrated. Because it's concentrated you need to dilute with water. Each individual LabColor tells you the ingredients for that particular color for instance the Tropical Purple is Water, Red 40, Ext. Violet 2, Red 33, Germaben II ... Emerald is Water, Green 5, Yellow 5, Germaben II (Germaben is the preservative which is needed since there's water in it)

ok, maybe I was thinking about ultramarines with the "suspending in liquid glycerin," no? All the coloring confuses me. I am going to order some more stuff on this friday, but I can never know what is better for what unless I actually read it on Brambleberry or something like that (or here) Anyways, I didn't say anything about food coloring. I'm not sure if that bolded part was meant to be a quote of my question from the previous page or a new question or what. How do you know if you should use high or low ph labcolors if its not specifically for "soap bars"

From what I understand, high PH is your soap; low PH is more like MP, lotions and creams. You can put an oxide or an ultramarine in some glycerin so it's easier to mix into your product. The glycerin won't work if you work with a formula that has no water.

so if I only do melt and pour, and other bath products but not CP, I don't need the high PH labcolors?

I use Oatmeal, Milk,& Honey fo.....smells just like almond......I do my lotion in small batches....so I can use different fragrances....I add it to the base and mix well....

So wait, if you normally have to add a preservative to your products, like salt scrub or whatever, and the color has germaben II in it, do you have to add more for the scrub? I mean that is just preservative for the color itself, its not enough for the other products, right?

ohk. So the fact that there is already a preservative means nothing, you still need to add more preservative for the product itself. I didn't think that the little amount you got from a few drops of color would matter but just checking. I have another question about this, but its Off topic, so I might start another post once I get my thoughts together. Thanks alot for your help soap buddy

Always go by the total weight of all your ingredients. A few drops of color with a preservative added would not be enough for the whole formula.

Ok, so I know one of the very first posts said not to heat the premade base, but what if the instructions say to heat it to 120 degrees? What would be the reason for that? It does say not to heat it past a certain temp, etc.... but I am wondering why I can't just mix it up as it with my FO. I guess it's always better to follow the rules, but it doesn't give very specific instructions-ie, whether to double boil or what. I would guess I would need to double boil it monitoring the temp but still. I guess I can email them about it monday, I was just really looking forward to making some this weekend. oh well, I guess it can wait!
