Hello All,

I made a couple of batches of shampoo bars (using different recipes) and I think I am doing something wrong.

My hair feels gummy after using--almost like I have washed my hair with shampoo and hair gel at the same time. Even after doing a vinegar rinse, I still feel gummy.

Is this normal with a shampoo bar?

Also, when I used my regular conditioner with it, it looked like I had greasy spaghetti strands.

Any thoughts how I should make these?

Lisa

Shampoo bars don't work for everyone. For me, they make my hair gummy as well. I bought some synthetic shampoo bars online from another soaper and those work great.

Hmmm, I wonder how she makes them? I can't use my own shampoo bar either. Leaves my hair like Betty Spaghetti hair. Seriously I could bend it up and it would stay! My friends and some family members love the stuff. I tried the no-shampoo regimen once and that was REALLY awful. Nope, didn't have beautiful luxurious locks, just my stiff, bendaroo hair. My hair tends to be dry and fine. My friends and family that like it have really oily hair. Maybe that's the difference?

Thanks Soapbuddy!

Of course, this sent me off on a tangent to learn how to make these synthetic detergent bars and it is actually pretty easy BUT do I really want to invest another $50+ or so in new ingredients? Mulling this one over.

Day 2 of my shampoo bar--used a vinegar rinse and then my regular conditioner. Mistake! Looks like I used about a quarter cup of gel in my hair & forgot to blow dry, OR have come to work with extremely greasy hair. Not to mention my new highlights are turning a little low light.

I read somewhere that it takes a week for a shampoo bar to really start working so hair can take the higher PH. . .but the issues I am having are leading me to believe this isn't for me.

0% actually, now that I check her recipe. . .

She also has palm oil in it at a slightly larger percentage than coconut. .could that be it. . .

BTW--hair must be picking up ALL OF THE MOISTURE AND DIRT int he world as my sort of greasy hair this am has turned into HOMELESS BAG LADY HAIR tonight. . .can't wait to get off work so I can use regular shampoo to get this junk out!!!!

Yuck

Disclaimer: I'm really new to soap and don't have nearly the experience that soapbuddy and some of the others here do!

That said, I actually just used one of my bars that I made three weeks ago (I know, I know...it's not fully cured. I would never sell or give anything away at 3 weeks. It's just more so that I can see for myself how the soap feels at 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks.). I am amazed at how great my hair feels and looks. It's super soft and shiny. Maybe it's just your recipe?? And, though, I've only ever used this bar on my hair, like others have mentioned, it seems like some people just can't use them.

I used the following recipe, which is one of my favorite basic soap bars:

Olive (50%)
Coconut (30%)
Palm (17%)
Avacado (3%)

I always use 7% superfat and 38% water. I'm going to keep using this on my hair (I usually wash every other day), so that I can get a more accurate picture of how it does long term, but so far so good after about 4 washes. Who knows...it might end up turning my hair into 'bag lady hair' too after using it a couple of weeks!

I had some M&P soaps left from Christmas presents, so I tried one as a shampoo bar. It was shea m&p base, with Turkish Mocha FO, and instant coffee powder. It leaves my hair feeling fantastic. Unfortunately, it's nearly all used up, so I'll have to order some more shea base. My hair is "normal", not dry or greasy.
