Hi Folks,

I have made about a dozen batches of soap now and the single hardest thing for me is getting the color I am envisioning.

1) For the dark purple, I have read that you can mix in some ultramarine blue with the ultra-violet. What ratio of violet to blue do you use for this effect?

2) How much ultramarine per pound of oils is normal for CP soap?

3) I have better results using TiO2 to prepare the base oils since my recipe is 30% olive and 35% palm. Should I keep this up or just stick with the ultramarine in higher quantities?

I find ultramarine violet goes gray for me. I have better luck using soap colors like FD&C Blue #1, which morphs to purple. Anytime you use TD, it will lighten your oils, but also lighten your colors. I would start with 1 tsp. of the ultramarines, then take it from there.

Thanks Soapbuddy. It always looks gray to me right after I put it in the mold but hasn't stayed that way yet. I finally got a nice dark(er) purple yesterday. I kept adding bits of pigment until the mix looked about right. It looked sky blue right at gel but ended up a really nice purple.

Hopefully I didn't get so much pigment in that the lather is blue. Ask me how I know about that phenomenon... ;)

I've been avoiding the FD&C colors for the moment in an effort to reduce variables and try and learn as much as I can about pigments before moving to the next process.

I hope your soap comes out just the way you like it and with white bubbles. :)
