Teach Soap

HELLO,
I just wanted to know if anyone can tell me what kind of lye they use, where to get it, which lye not to use,etc. I have a recipe and I'm really excited to get started but cant find lye around town. I read not to use Red Devil, so Im at a loss. Thanks so much for your help!

I got mine from AAA Chemical but have heard good things about the Lye Guy. Google them and compare prices and shipping.

It can be hard to find locally because it's used in making meth. Kind of annoying but you can still get it just not from the Hardware store like in days gone past.

See if you can find Rooto lye in your local hardware store. Just make sure it says 100% lye.
I would also try your local pool supply store, but you might have to buy a large bag.

check your local ace hardware store they carry it.. however i have gotten good results like 3.73 a pound from ebay including shipping... try that as well...

Just noticed you're in Atlanta too. I've checked all the local hardware stores and found nothing. If you can find it locally, let me know!

I'm in Atlanta also (well Tucker) and I get lye at my local hardware store: Handy Ace Hardware.

Is that 16 oz? I was curious so I checked the Lye Guy to see how much it would cost with shipping. Right now he has a sale going on, buy 5 32 oz get one free. With shipping that ends up being $6/32 oz. That's about what I paid with AAA Chemical too. Guess I'm better off ordering than buying local!

I'm resurrecting this old post just to say I was at Lowes Hardware store tonight and noticed they are once again selling lye in the plumbing section. Several months ago they put what they had on clearance and told me they were not carrying it any longer. I know some other soapers were told the same at their Lowes.

It's the 2 pound bottle of Roebic "Crystal Drain Cleaner" and it does specifically say "100% Lye" and "100% Sodium Hydroxide" on the label. It's a little over $7 bucks for 2 pounds so you can definitely find it cheaper online... but in a pinch it's there! At least it is here in Baltimore.
