Hi Everyone,

I have been using a stick blender to make cold process soap and it has been working great for me. I recently just doubled a batch though and the stick blender can't handle it. I was thinking of getting a free standing mixer but have read that it doesn't work good. Does anyone know why? Does anyone out there use a free standing mixer? What are the pro's and con's? I really don't want to spend the money if its not going to work well. How do other people mix big batches of soap?

I would say because a stand mixer is designed to incorporate air into the mix. Something you don't want in soap. Plus, the odds caustic mixture would fly outta there is just too big a risk for me.

What I'd say to try is the paint-mixer stick plus drill. USe an old 5 gallon bucket from one of your oils.

They make quite large stick blenders - do you have a really small one? They really do work the best - I'm not crazy about the results with the squirrel mixer plus drill, i think the stick blender does a better job.

Yes magic hands i have a small one. It was like $19 at walmart I believe. Where do you happen to get a larger one? I looked at target and walmart but they all seems to be about the same size as the one i have.

Free standing mixer will mix bubbles into your soap. When I make large batches, I use a bucket and a paint mixer attachment on my cordless drill.

They do indeed react differently. I would recommend getting a paint mixer that fits onto a drill to do your next larger batches - rather than the free standing mixer. The free standing mixer doesn't seem to mix as well (in my experience) and also seems to take longer (probably because the heads spin slower).
