Teach Soap

I bought some water soluble TD a couple of weeks ago. It didn't come with instructions. I used it by mixing about 2 tbs in a baggie with an equal amount of water, squishing until well dissolved, then adding to a cup of my soap recipe ( separate from the main batch) at light trace. I then mixed it with a whisk and stickblended. It looked like it had swirled nicely on the top of the loaf, but after I cut it, it was chalky and unappealing looking about 1/4 inch down.

So, I google and find a-l-l-l-l kinds of mixed messages on using it. Like adding it to the lye water before adding the lye
(To lighten a whole batch.) Adding it to the lye water after adding the lye. (Again to lighten a whole batch)

Adding to the warm oils before adding the lye water. Those instructions said that it works just as well, if not better in oils than the oil dispersable TD, because the oil dispersable TD tends to be lumpy and more difficult to use than the water dispersable TD.

So, what is the best way to use water soluble (or dispersable) TD? How much ppo? And If I only want to lighten/whiten part of a batch or use it to swirl?

I have some of that too. I used it one time. I do remember that you are not supposed to use more than 1 tsp. per pound of oil or your soap can get chalky. I added mine at light trace and it turned out just fine. Hope this helps.

I agree about using 1 tsp. PPO. If you are going to use it in the whole batch, adding it to your lye water should work fine. If you are using it in just part of the batch, you're better off putting you raw soap at a thin trace into a small cup, add the TD and use a frother (llike Aerolatte) to mix it all together.
