How are these done? Is it a combination of butters or just one or am I completely off? Thanks.

It could be just one butter that's whipped, one butter with some liquid oils added, or a combo of butters with some liquid oils added.

Soapbuddy, are body butters greasy? I tried one sample at a craft show that kept me greasy for 20 minutes before it soaked in. Is that normal? Id love to make some as gifts but would like one that goes into your skin fairly quickly. Where to start?

So if I take some shea butter or cocoa butter, melt it down and then just whip it with my blender, that would work and that's it? Do you need to add a preservative? Sorry for all of the questions.

If there is no water, you don't need a preservative. However, if there is a chance that water could get introduced into your product, then a preservative is a good idea.

I am a newbie and today i did my first attempt on lotion making from the brambleberry kit. After I made my lotion i started researching more on body butters. I comebined some recipes i saw online and I am so satisfied with my body butter! I usedone of brambleberry's scent that came with the lotion kit! I was successful! And here is the recipe I used:

6 oz. Shea butter
1.2 oz Olive Oil
1 oz. Corn Starch
1.2 oz Avocado Oil
1 oz Almond Oil
1 teaspoon fragrance oil

Melt Shea Butter in microwave until melted. Add all of the above ingredients. Blend all ingredients with a hand mixer, (like the ones you use for baking). Refrigerate for 10 minutes. Then mix again with hand mixer until it gets fluffy. It will reach its creamy consistency but it takes a long time. I was mixing it for more than 20 minutes, stopping in between to take a breaks coz my hand was starting to ache and tire from holding the mixer.

When light and fluffy like frosting, you can transfer in you jar or container. Before doing all of the above, make sure to sterilize your equipment. Just add a little clorox to water and dip all your necessary equipment and utensils and jars. Then rinse with tap water to get the clorox out. It is important that everything you use is sterile and clean.

As for the shelf like, i read that the above does not need preservative since it does not contain water. Hope this helps!

Hopefully your containers that you have are new. You should not rinse them with anything; including bleach water, They should be clean & sanitary on their own from your vendor. If they get rinsed, those containers now have germs and or mold implanted inside those containers. New containers should not need anything before you pour a product into it. Your utensils, mixing bowls or spatulas can be rinsed in bleach or a sanitizing solution. Spritz your working area with a bleach solution and use paper towels and disposable gloves. Wait till all the jars have cooled off completely before putting the caps on. You don't want any condensation on the lids. Otherwise that could cause problems later.

Soapbuddy, I was going to try body butter on my family at Christmas ( they are always my test subjects ( poor people). I was going to use some of those little 4 oz. mason jars I saved. can't I sterilize them to use for the body butter?

if they are canning jars, couldn't you sterilize them in boiling distilled water?

we homebrew so we keep sanitisers on hand, Sterisan is a great hard surface sanitiser that you let air dry , as soon as item is dry you can store with it. it evaps very fast with no residue so i LOVE it. dont kow where youd find it online but we get it at our local home brew store. would be great for the mason jars! and a tiny amount goes along way.
