I'm terribly confused. I understand the importance of labeling cosmetics and whatnot, but Lush Cosmetics seems to be a company that prides itself on not using erroneous packaging for environmental reasons. I totally agree with them, but how do away with selling naked soap and other toiletries if they are being sold without labels (and an ingredients list)?
Interestingly enough, they list their ingredients on the website, but that's the only place I have seen it.
Does anyone know?

They can, because they are a big company. If they get fined, they pay it and go on as before.

I don't know if this has anyting to do with it, but they are made in Canada. Maybe their regs are different?

I recently visited my family in England and had a look in their local Lush store, it was identical to the stores they have here in Canada and, presumably, in the States. Labeling laws are similar in Canada and England, and far more strict than in the States. As Soapbuddy said, they just pay the fines and carry on regardless. Both countries are over worked and short staffed, Lush just takes advantage of this situation! Ironically the 2 farmers markets I do regularly have food and produce inspectors walking round, but none check labels!!!

Been doing some checking up on the company and their roots are in England as a supplier for The Body Shop. This is an interesting article if, perhaps, a little biased. No matter what, we can all learn something from their approach to selling, amusing, catchy, and more importantly, memorable!

That's interesting. While I love the whole notion of selling naked products (less waste), I was wondering how they got away with it. Very interesting stuff.

Thanks everyone!

I've never been to Lush, nor bought anything from there. It was interesting to read some consumer reviews
from the closest store to me, though. This is about 60 or so miles from me in Georgetown, an upscale area of Washington, DC. Here are a few things that I saw.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/lush-washington

1. They put their stores in very tony locations.
2. Consumers don't like overly assertive salespeople. (Nothing new there)
3. If you're going to have a store, have good parking.
4. In general, the market for men is still virtually untapped. They might buy something for a SO, but don't think of the products in terms of themselves.
5. Consumers aren't well educated about "natural" bath/body products.
6. Lush has an online customer forum
7. There are people who have a lot more money to spend on bath/body products than I do.

I myself have tried and tried to like Lush. Out of everything I have tried, only one scent and one product I like (American Cream? and New shampoo disk). Fortunately, I traded for everything, so I was only out for postage. My humble opinion is that we, as home bath and body makers, make superior products, because we research and try to comply with the law. Unfortunately we don't have the ad budget or the lush forum behind us (and woe unto you if you get those women mad at you. You are dead meat) But it is frustrating as all get out to make a superior product and be slammed because you are not Lush, with all their problems. :x

I can't even use their soap anymore. My skin gets flaky within minutes of drying off.

So far, their shampoo bars haven't failed me yet.

I had my first Lush experience this week (visiting a store).
I was quite overwhelmed by the combinations of scents when first entering the shop.
The ingredients weren't clearly listed in the shop but were in the magazine they gave me.
They specifically invited me to touch and sniff anything and everything which is a bit yuck considering it's all unwrapped.
Not too happy about the bruise I have from a block of soap which fell off a high table and landed on my foot.
Nevertheless, lots of shoppers and lots of sales during the half an hour I perused!
They're obviously doing something right...

I have been at a Lush store in Aspen, CO and once you buy a "naked" product, the ingredients are listed in your receipt.

Wow - talk about knowing after the fact...
You don't know what you get until you buy it, unless you ask questions to the salesperson who may or may not be as educated as we are
