ok... so i've been using fo for my lip balms/butters and i decided to try using an eo instead (to make a vegan balm) well... it's REALLY REALLY oily (i expected it to be a little more oil because of the eo, but not this bad) and i'm having a hard time figuring out what ratio to use to make it not happen i'm not finding a recipe either (or perhaps i'm just not looking in the right place for it), i use the brambleberry m+p base.

TIA

How much eo did you use compared to how many ounces of base? When I do mine, I use 5 drops of eo's to 2 ounces of base.

please make sure you're using flavor oils, not standard fo - and make sure your essential oils are approved for lip balm usage. Check with your supplier if you aren't sure.

You should also be aware that flavor oils are still vegan. It's a common misconception that vegan=natural, when in fact vegan means no animal products or byproducts. For example, a vegan would wear polyester instead of silk, because silk is produced by silkworms. The M&P Lip Balm base contains beeswax, and will NOT be vegan, no matter how you flavor it.

All that being said, you should be using roughly the same amount of EO as other flavors - it certainly shouldn't be enough to change the texture. How much base did you use, and how much (and which) eo did you add?

thanks for the help

yes i am using lip safe fo and eo, and when i make a fully vegan balm it will be vegan (no beeswax) i had never used eo's though and wanted to get a feel for them... :D

and i used the same ratio for the eo as fo (according to the recipe on teachsoap.com) that's why i was curious if i should have changed it.

guess i shall just have to play a bit more.

thanks

One other thing, is this the first time you have used the base? I found that when I used it, it was very oily. I started making my own from scratch and it is not nearly as oily. I have had mixed reviews though. Some people like the m&p base and some people like the one I make. Maybe try adding a little beeswax or a butter of some sort to make it harder.
