Yesterday I unmoulded my latest batch and was acting like a kid on Christmas morning until I noticed one tiny “patch” on the top of the log. It was a small white crystallized spot along one edge. I immediately grabbed for the pH strips and tested the patch (did not need water) and yep ph=12.

I cut off the spot and continued to cut & stamp the log and tested the pH of the rest of the log which was consistently pH=9. I can only imagine this is a drop of lye that has ended up on top of the log after I finished pouring.

I always clear my desk of containers and utensils away before I crank out the stick blender so I am really at a loss to explain this and doubting my safety measures a little at the moment! :cry:

Anyway here’s a photo…and a reminder to fellow newbies – thoroughly check your soap!!!

I had to ditch a 4lb. batch of soap last year beacuse of that ( I had more than 1 spot of lye ) That stopped me from adding lye to ice to cool it faster . Now I add lye to cold water to make sure I've got all the lye desolved...................... live and learn I guess.
By the way nice job on the soap, it's very pretty. What fragrance did you use?

Very pretty. I usually do the tops of mine very similar. It's fun because they always look different!

You can also dissolve the lye in minimum liquid, mix til clear, then add the rest as ice cubes.
