So excited to have peeps who want to talk soap.....everyone else's eyes glaze over. I am re-new to soaping ( tried some years ago then had babies) this is experiment #6 in my ultimate quest for my perfect base bar. Here is the recipe I used
1.5 oz castor
9.3 oz coconut
10.8 oz olive
9.3 oz palm
4.6 oz lye
10.2 oz water
I ran this trough the lye calc
used sweat orange eo, 1/4tsp td and 1/2 tps pink clay mixed in two separate layers
Went super thick super fast and 24hrs later is as hard as a rock impossible to cut and when I do cut it breaks and crumbles
Colours great but I think maybe to lye or waterheavy even though I ran it through the calc?
Any idea?
Thanks everyone

Have you used your tongue to do a zap test? It sounds like it may be lye heavy. Your formula looks fine to me, so the next question is are you absolutely sure you measured everything right with a digital scale? At what temperature did you combine the oils and lye? Did you stick blend just to emulsion or a heavier trace? Did you gel? If so, did you gel by covering and insulating or CPOP? Did you use any sodium lactate? There are plenty of smarter experts on this forum than I am, and I'm sure Irena will be by soon to help you troubleshoot. I hate when I can't explain these things too! :)

You have too much lye in there. What you posted is only about 1% superfat, so it could be lye heavy. That's why you got a fast trace and why it's hard and crumbles.

Castor Oil 1.5
Coconut Oil 9.3
Olive Oil 10.8
Palm Oil 9.3
Total Weight 30.9 ozs.
For that size batch, you need 8-12 ozs. of liquid and 4.3 ozs. of lye for a 7% superfat.

Thanks soapbuddy and jennybee. Great advise. I think I might have made a rookie mistake. I had a dish towel under my scale. So that soap which looks good but would melt skin will be made into laundry soap. Wanted to try that anyway haha. Will the oink clay and TD be OK for laundry?

Yes, use it for laundry.
