The detergent by itself is not what cleans you; the soap cleans you. Well, I guess detergents can clean you, but they do not act exactly like soap. Soap molecules are attracted to water at one end and oil/dirt at the other end. So one end bonds with the oil and dirt on your skin. Then, when you rinse your skin off with water, the other end bonds with the water. As the water runs over your skin, it pulls the soap molecules with it, which pull the dirt and oil from your hands along with them. That's how soap works to clean your skin. The pure soap base (detergent-free) will clean you without added detergents, via the process described above.
Detergents work similar to soap, but they are harsher. They cause a lot of lather and bubbles, which is why they are added to soap bases. They are not added because they are necessary to get you clean.
Pure soap base (detergent-free) will get you clean and is gentler on your skin. "Regular" soap base (detergent added) will get you clean, has lots of bubbles and lather, but can be harsher on your skin.
It's whatever type of base you prefer.
