So I don't make cold process, hot process, or any other variation of CP soap. It's not that I don't like it, I actually think some of the stuff you can do is super cute! But I have this paranoid fear of making my own. First of all MP soap is melt, color and scent, mold, and done! Pretty simple steps and not too much work. With CP soap you need a certain combo of oils and a super fat % and dealing with actual lye :? and this is just prepping to make the soap! It's much more work (props to the masters!) and it seems like anyone who hasn't made it before could easily screw it up! I have this paranoid fear that if I did make CP soap I would either cause harm to myself or anyone who would buy my product! I'm probably blowing it a teeny bit out of proportion but I don't know if I could ever feel comfortable enough to try CP soap. Is this a normal thing to think about? I feel like maybe I'm a bit too paranoid but considering some of the horror stories (that kid with the lye burns, lye volcanos, if you don't mix goats milk and lye properly, etc.) it makes me retreat safely into the arms of not so scary sounding MP soap.

CP soap is not so scary once you make a batch. You can start out pretty simple with just olive oil, water and lye. Here is a sticky I posted that will give you more info. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3800 Just respect the lye and follow safety procedures. Run ANY recipe through a lye calculator as mistakes happen, even in books. I prefer a superfat of 7%.

That's how I felt before making CP as well. I watched lots CP videos and read a lot of books before attempting. Once I tried it though, I thought to myself, "Seriously, what was I waiting for?"

Here's a link to Anne-Marie's videos http://www.youtube.com/user/soapqueentv

I made my first recipe out of a book. I did no research before hand. I think that if I had researched, I probably would have scared myself! I found Red Devil lye at the hardware store and I bought crisco and olive oil at the grocery store. It was UGLY but it was a good soap. (Pro tip - camillia buds do NOT make an attractive additive to CP soap.)

Seriously - it's not that hard. I think my first recipe used volume measurements - either that or I used a cheapo not-digital food scale.

If you are nervous, I also recommend a soap that is 100% olive oil, or some combo of olive oil and shortening. KISS - Keep It Simple, Soapers! (Much nicer that Keep It Simple, Stupid, I think.) This will make a soap that is well behaved and traces slowly, so you don't have to do any fancy footwork.

Do you have any lye? If you don't, you may be able to find it at a hardware store. Red Devil no longer makes straight lye, but other companies do.

Simple tips -
A) allow yourself 3-4 hours. You won't be working constantly, but once you add the lye to the water, it takes a while to cool. And if your oils get too hot, they take a while to cool also. Yes, you can speed up the cooling with an ice water bath or by taking them outside - but IMO, that's just asking for a cat to trip you and splash lye water everywhere!

B) Lay out all of your materials. I lay out molds, mineral oil to grease the molds with, silicone spatulas, dishwashing gloves, etc.

C) have a plan. Where will you put your soap while it is in the mold hardening? I lay out several old towels, put the mold on the towels, then gentle lay more towels over the top of the molds. I usually put several tall cups inside the towel to form a tent over the mold so the towel doesn't touch the soap.

D) Have a roll of paper towels handy.

E) Be sure your pot is stainless steel or glass. If you don't have one, you can usually pick up a cheapo stainless steel stockpot at Walmart, Big Lots or Fred's. These pots have very thin bottoms which means they are useless for anything besides boiling pasta or making soap.

F) For your first soap, don't try to both color AND scent. If you scent, use a well-behaved FO or EO. Lavender or mint are good choices.

Do NOT make your soap by volume. Always go by weight and superfat. Volume method is not accurate for soapmaking. Make sure that your superfat, so your soap doesn't end up lye heavy.

I jumped in feet first... signed up for a class at the collage. It got me through the basics, a lot of info on lye safety! There is a learning curve for most of us (my first batch is in a tin in the basement  ). It was right after this first batch that I started doing the reading I maybe should have done first but better late than never. And now I can't stop reading and gathering info on soap making - that's the addiction. But the end results once you get the hang of it is amazing.

When I work with lye no one else is in the house and my dog leaves the kitchen on his own - SMART dog! I gear up and focus on what I am doing - then I am rewarded with soap I love.

If there are no classes where you live try to find a CP soap maker that would guide you through that first batch.

As soon as I get my lye I'll be making CP soap without having ever made soap before. I don't have children, my cats can easily be corralled into another room for a little while, so I'm not worried about a lye accident of that nature. I also got pH strips to test the pH of the soaps. From what I understand if there's too much lye in them still even after curing then the pH will be high and I'll know they're too harsh to use. Wearing closed shoes, pants, long sleeves, gloves, apron, safety glasses/goggles and hair tied back should take care of my personal safety and prevent serious harm in the event of splash. A catastrophic accident could still happen, My stove could burst into flames when I try to cook dinner, I could accidentally under cook the chicken and give us all salmonella poisoning, or I might burn it to a crisp because I got distracted and forgot to set a timer. We all live with a lot of daily risks that we just don't tend to think about very much. I was a little scared of the lye factor, but then I decided it didn't have to be scary as long as I took all the safety precautions.

I felt the same way as you at first but MP was just not doing it for me. Its not scary at all and with the proper knowledge ( and lots of Soap Queen Videos ) you'll be just fine :)

Education and practice make perfect, so go for it! Just don't try to make a batch one day and sell the soap you make the next. Spend some time practicing, experimenting, and educating yourself. It is a journey and a fun one at that! Most importantly, you can always learn something new, so keep stretching yourself and do not be afraid to fail either. Often that is when you learn the most!
