I just wanted to post my very first batch of M+P! I went at it full force like always. No temperature gun. Forgot my saran wrap in the microwave. Figured out what colors and scents I wanted to use as I went. Not as bad as I thought it would be considering all of that haha. I bought the botanical soaps kit from Michael's just to start with and see what soaping is all about! It came with a white glycerin base, pretty cool celtic molds, vanilla, citrus, and herbal scents, a pink mica, and apricot seeds. I realized AFTER I was finished that my fiance' has an infrared temp gun.
My impressions.....This glycerin base heated up way faster than I thought even with a 20 second burst in the microwave. I attempted a layer, but I don't think I let my first layer get a thick enough layer before I poured. I poured too early for my solid colors, and I see how the apricot seeds settled at the bottom. I also used some additional scents and colors my mom gave me, but I liked the mica the best. I randomly put a pinch of that in there too without mixing it with a small bit of glycerin first, so I saw the clumped spots of color.
My questions....Is around 135 degrees the magic temp to make a good pour to not mix my layers together and to keep exfoliants suspended, or should I just go by feel/look/temp of the base? How do you know when a bottom layer has a thick enough skin on top? By touch or timing or a certain temp?
Thanks!
