Teach Soap

I've pulled a few recipes off the Soap Queen blog for sugar scrubs that I'm hoping to play with and make work. I've noticed that, of the four I'm looking at, three contain significant amounts of shea butter. I dislike shea butter personally (I worked at Bath and Body Works for a few months - I HATED shea butter after that job!) and was thinking about substituting cocoa butter in the recipes. Would that work, or should I try harder to conquer my dislike of shea?

You can alter any recipe you like, but you will need to play with the amounts, they are not straight substitutions. Cocoa butter is much harder than shea butter, and some of the properties are different. But you can experiment away and find a consistency that works for you. Have fun and enjoy the journey!

Also remember that cocoa butter has a distinct odor if you don't buy it deodorized. It will probably go well with some scents, but one mistake I made was trying a citrus type scent in a batch I made for lotion bars. I absolutely hate the scent, and it's a waste of supplies because I used it in the whole batch.

Mango butter is a decent replacement for shea butter, but you'll still have to experiment a bit to find what you want. Good luck!

Hi Soapbuddy,

My wife and I reuse our deodorant containers from days gone by when we used to buy them from the shops.

We just let them soak in warm soapy water and then give them a bit of a scrub with a firm flexible brush to get out all the old stuff...we dont want our new mixture to be contaminated!

Also - for those looking for a few nice scents for their lotions, potions and soaps, try vanilla essential oil - it smells so good!
