Teach Soap

Hello,

I have an opportunity to teach soap making classes on an Air Force base here in California at the Arts and Crafts center. I plan to teach with children (melt & pour) and adults (cold process). For the initial course for adults, should I give them the opportunity to make soap themselves or make it a demonstration only? I will be charging people for this course, but I'm scared to let others handle lye that have never done so before. It took me a while to get up the nerve to make soap and I don't think others should handle it until they know the proper safety guidelines. So how can I get away with charging them for their first cold-process soap class without them getting to make soap? Handouts & info maybe? Just wondering if anyone has done this before?

For the cold process, I would do demonstration only. Then you could give them a choice of either some MP soap, or CP soap that's has been cured and that you brought with you.

Instead of doing CP for adults, how about showing them how to do rebatching?

How many in the CP class? If you keep the numbers small its totally manageable. If your expecting more than 6 and its your first time, I would re name the class and call it a demo.

Opps, I thought they were two different classes. Not a good idea to do CP with kids around.

It is for two different classes, I would never have children around cold process. I have 4 of my own.

I wish someone around here would offer a class. That is so kind of you. I have no experiance with teaching and I am new to soap makeing but I think a demo of the cold process method followed by letting them make there own rebatch soaps might be fun. Just an idea. Also you could always throw in a how to make your own luandry soap or something that might be something else they can do hands on and wont put you out a bunch of money you can make lie 5-10 gallons for less then 5 bucks .
I am planning makeing melt and pour soaps with my son and my 2 nieces this summer so let me know if you get any tips for that lol my son will be 8 and my nieces 12 and 13
