Teach Soap

Walmart carries coconut oil in the oils section, along with sunflower and safflower, olive, etc. My main recipe calls for olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil and shea butter. I use 25% or less coconut oil in my soaps because I don't want my soaps to be too drying. I also use Sam's Club pure olive oil.

If you need product in a hurry, Soapgoods.com is great. If you decide to use fragrance oils, read the reviews on the one that interests you before you order it because some of them cause ricing, some accelerate trace, some disappear completely after making CP with them.

The most important thing to invest in is safety equipment. Goggles that fit over glasses and gloves. You would be surprised at how easily you can splash no matter how careful you are.

I recently lucked out and found large jars of coconut oil at walmart. I was buying the 10 oz jars of organic before from the grocery . Thank you for that little surprise soaping gods. Hope that helps

If you live near any kind of sizable Asian market, be sure to check them out. The often have excellent quality and prices on produce (herbs) and a great prices on oils.

Reminder to Self: "Cut No Soap Before It's Time!"

Be aware that olive oil production is down; up to 80% due to a very bad year. This means next time you buy your olive oil, it will be much higher priced, or it could be adultarated. So if you can, buy it now!

Thanks for the heads up Irena, I will buy a couple of gallons next week at Sam's club.

My son lives in a small town in OR. They have to drive to Lebanon for Walmart or I know Eugene has a Costco which is similar to Sam's.
Of Course with the price of Gas you might come out better buying a 50 lb bucket of Coconut from Columbus foods and paying shipping. It is about the best price on Coconut oil I have found and I go through fifty lbs in about six months

Be careful how much you buy . . . don't forget, it will go rancid. (Yes, this IS coming from the person who buys 18 gallons at a time . . . but my goal was 5000 soaps -- which I think I just met -- and I still have 6 gallons of OO left! I can still make more soap (just might not be ready for this festival May 8 -12th).

Actually, the oil didn't go rancid . . . the soap did about 3 months after making it (two batches from the same jug of oil). I'm guessing it was old oil that I had bought. The rest of the soaps made at that time and since are just wonderful. Rancid smells really off. You would know.
