Should've cut it before the last post. I guess soon as I got it out, I wanted to share the results. :)

The dark layer in the first photo appears again in the rounds. I kind of expected the top of the soap to be darker than the bottom, but instead, the outer layer from top to bottom is darker than the inner layer. That leads me to deduce that the part hat cools the fastest gets dark, and the rest does not. What surprised me (with that in mind) is how well defined the line is. It seems if temperature is an issue, it would be much more gradual than it is.

Hehehe...maybe I can give it to friends, and tell them I practiced pretty d*mned hard to get the effect of looking like a freshly-sawed piece of wood. :)

Be well

Yep! That soap got really hot, which expanded any air inside creating that chimney effect. The outside darker ring could also be from a fragrance used. If that's the case, over time, all of the soap will be the same color.

Not sure about expanding existing air. The way it was poured in, there wouldn't have been much, if *any* air around the soap at that section. Certainly there would not have been *nearly* enough to expand that much. Looking at the texture of the soap in that area, I think the soap got sucked in from the side after it had started to solidify (by the still-flowing lipid-to-liquid inside). Any air existing around that portion was likely sucked in from outside the mold due to the contraction. In essence, the air was due to the contraction- the contraction was not due to the air.

All that aside- the heat was still most certainly the cause of this effect. It's just the underlying physics that are debatable. :)

And yes, the soap is all turning the same darker colour. I noticed that in the bar from the overflow mold last night. There goes my tree soap idea. :)

Be well
