Teach Soap

Can someone please re-fresh my memory on what the equation for a new soap mold would be. The numbers should be the oils + the amount of lye water correct??? Thanks

Are you talking about Length X Width X Height times 0.4?

0.55 is correct to use for converting cubic inches to fluid ounces for water. The specific gravity of oil is less than water (think differences in density), so you can't use this factor for mold calculations.

0.4 is a commonly used factor that is always a little bit off since it's estimating the specific gravities of different types of oils that we use in our recipes, but it's very close for common recipes.

So.....I'm confused.
robertw98144, you are saying the opposite of Linda, right? Linda is saying the formula gives you oils, plus lye and water. You are saying the formula give you oils only.

This is so easy to get confused because people frequently talk about weights without saying if it's oils only or total batch. I know I get confused all the time which is why I use the online re-size calculator for my default recipe the first time I use a mold - and save the output in a word document with the mold dimensions.

I have two new sets of molds on order, so I know I'm going to have to wrestle with batch size for both types until I have the target volumes down to a routine... I think of it as part of a cost of picking a new mold. haha
