Teach Soap

Does anyone have a good cleaning laundry bar recipe for makeing your own laundry soap. I want to make my own laundry soap. Borax, washing soda and grated soap but would like to make my own bars for the grated soap part.

To keep it simple, you could use 100% coconut or lard at 0% superfat.

I personally don't care for homemade laundry soap at all, but to each his own. I find that it makes dingy clothes, keeping the butters out, the superfat low (or 0) and the oils light will help with these issues. I agree with Dave. I think I'd try a high coconut bar, Good luck and I hope you like it!

the recipe i use to make laundry detergent suggests to do a vinegar rinse when you would normally add the softener. that might help with the dingy issue. i have been making my own and using it for the past 3 months now. i love it. I will be making some laundry bars and will definitely try the 100% Coconut 0% superfat! thanks

I have several bars I made with 100% soy, partly as an experiment and partly because the results of soy are ALMOST identical to the results of olive oil (low suds/bubbles, low cleansing, high conditioning, high creaminess), with the exception that olive oil soap will get very hard if you wait long enough, and soy bars won't. But hardness doesn't matter at all in the laundry, nor does sudsing.

I've grated up all those soy bars, and also grated up an equal number of 100% coconut bars (also 0% superfat), and I use equal amounts of each grated soap in my laundry mix. No dinginess, absolutely clean clothes. Works great.

I do, however, want a good substitute for the coconut bar. A great many of my friends seem to be allergic to coconut AND palm -- and I can't use lard, for other reasons. So I'm having a tough time getting any other results I like, when using anything other than 100% olive oil (for body/face/hand bars, as well as for laundry).

What about Babassu oil? I know of a couple soapers that use it in place of palm, but it is a bit more expensive.

About laundry bars.....
I see some people do 100% Coconut Oil, some do 50/50 Lard/Coconut. The numbers come out very differently for the two options. The 100 Coconut has about twice the "Cleansing" value as the Lard/Coconut recipe. Would this translate to cleaning ability in the wash?

I've done both and also 100% lard for laundry and I don't notice any difference at all in the finished laundry. The only difference is the amount of bubbles (with 100% coconut) in my big bucket when I mix it.
