Teach Soap

A few weeks ago my father and I constructed a facsimile of the five pound mold from BB. Quick question before I get to soaping with it, like the two pound silicone mold from BB is it sized to hold a "five pounds of oils" batch or am I to do a bunch of calculations for density and volume to figure out my quantity of oil?

L x W x H x .4 and you should get a pretty good estimate of the volume for the total batch.

I do all my calcs with just the oil weights and have come pretty darn close to the volume I was expecting. I have made batches with 1000 grams of oil in my 3 lb mold, measured the volume of a few batches and got reasonably accurate numbers. When I size up or down I work from that 1000 gram "baseline" and have not gotten bad results yet.

I have asked BB this same question before in regards to their soap molds. The answer that they gave me is that the size of their molds go by the total weight of the soap batter. So the weight of oils+water+lye. So if the inside dimensions of your 5lb mold are the same inside dimensions of BB's 5lb mold then your mold will hold appoximately 5lbs of soap batter (total weight).

Enter the recipe, click calculate then use the batch resize feature on that page. You enter the height x width x length and it will give you the adjusted recipe size that exactly fits your mold.
