I got some clays and some oxides and I was wondering how much to use. I know you can make your colors lighter or darker or brighter, but what is a mid-range usage per pound of soap?

For clays 1/2 to 1 tps. per lb. of soap. For oxides or ultramarines, start with 1/4 tsp. If any of your oils are yellow that will change the final color.

What do you do if you are using oils or FOs or EOs that make your soap really dark?

If my oils are more yellow, I'll add more color if I'm using blues otherwise they'll look more green. Most of the time, if I have an FO that I know will darken or discolor the soap, I won't use a colorant. Sometimes before I add the FO I'll separate out a cup or so of the batter and color it and add the FO to the remaining batter. Then I can do a swirl with the colored batter (It's not fragranced so it won't discolor)

If it's a vanilla discoloring FO there really isn't anyway you can get around it. It will eventually turn brown unless it has a very, very low vanilla content them sometimes you can color over it. You can try vanilla color stabilizer but it will only hold off discoloration in cp for about 4-9 months. Also, when you use a vanilla discoloring fragrance the discoloration will eventually bleed into your other colors as well.

Can you add titanium dioxide to make it lighter maybe?

So that would work? If you use the titanium dioxide can you then use another colorant in it too?

Depending which oils you use, which fragrance or which colors; titanium dioxide might lighten it, but it could also make your color muddy.

Sometimes with scents that discolor it's easier to embrace it! I made a batch of Vanilla Oak soap using this Soap Queen tutorial for inspiration.

Well I don't know I guess I just want the soap to be pretty, lol. Brown or tan isn't pretty to me, lol. Maybe it would look ok if you could do a few colored swirls or layers in it or something.
