Trace is when the oils and lye solution have emulsified and won't separate. You can check for trace by dipping a spoon or whisk into your batter and drizzling some of the soap onto the top. If you have reached trace, the soap will leave a trail on top of the batter. Trace also refers to the thickness of the soap's consistency: light trace is fairly runny and the trail may disappear below the surface when you test for trace; thick trace is a pudding-like consistency. If you want a light trace, stop mixing once you see evidence of trace (the faint soap trails). If you need a thicker trace, just keep stirring or mixing until the soap thickens up to the desired consistency. Light trace is good for swirling, and heavier trace is good for layering.
