Teach Soap

Does anyone here use oleic acid? I can buy it much more cheaply than olive oil.

I don't soap with just that one ingredient - but where are you finding it in? Is it just a high oleic acid Sunflower oil maybe?

It's one of the standard items from one of the many local chemical factors. As far as I know it's pure oleic acid, no others present. It's Edenor OL72. Cheaper than olive oil but suitable for soap? No idea.

Actually that "72" designation puts it very close to olive oil, I wonder . . .

I've never tried it in this form and I don't know of any supplier that carries it in the US in small amounts.

It's strange to see that there is very little info on the Web - it mainly seems to be sold in the Far East despite the fact it is a Cognis product.

I found a site that gave me the percentages: C12-18 less than 13%
C18 one double bond, 72% - now this value is *exactly* what you get if you take the lowest and highest proportions of oleic acid in olive oil and average them. Hmmm!
C18 two double bonds, that's linoleic, less than or equal to 18%

I strongly suspect that it is commercial grade olive oil. They do sell it for making soap and detergents, that is its listed purpose. I just need to confirm price but if it is appreciably lower than EVOO from the supermarket, I will get say 5 kilos and try it.
