Hi everyone,

I've got a quick question. A friend wants me to make palm free soap I thought easy. However each batch being ALL 3 BATCHES :oops:

have seized as I've added the lye solution in with my oils. I've been reading through posts and mixed the last batch just now at 114F. Any suggestions?

20 oz coconut oil, 40oz rice bran oil, 8.3oz lye & 19.8oz water it's a recipe i found on bramble berry. it's seizing without any fragrance or colour added to it.

I ran it through soapcalc and your amounts look fine. It's not high in stearic acid, which can cause problems with seizing. Is it possible something as measured incorrectly?

What kind of coconut oil are you using? 72 regular coconut, fractionated coconut, cream of coconut or ???

rice bran oil has a much shorter shelf life than olive oil. Is it possible it could have been old stock that had oxidised? Something must be seriously wrong if it seized even without FO.

How accurate is your scale? Is it electric or does it use batteries? Maybe your batteries need replacing? If this is a small batch are you converting ounces into grams? How much are you superfatting?

the coconut oil is regular, rice bran oil is brand new and have only used this on the palm free oil soap, scales are electric and new batteries, superfat is at 5%

If you halved the recipe, did you run it through a lye calculator again? If not, you need to, as you can't just halve the recipe and use it as is.

Ditto what Irene and Linda said. Then print out the results and don't depend on your own math skills. Don't ask me how I know this. :oops:
