Ok, another silly question. I have been reading up on FDA regs on labeling, and one of the requirements is the address where the lotion or soap is made. If I am buying a pre-made base, whether for lotion or melt and pour soap and just adding fragrance and color, would I put the address of the manufacturer of the product or my address? If it is my address, and I'm not sure how I feel about using my home address, can a post office box be used?

You do need to put your address. I have never had anyone come to my home after seeing my address on my soaps and stuff.

As far as the PO Box, I'd contact the FDA and ask them, because some soapers say it's okay & some say it's not.

They're trying to get legislation approved to allow PO Boxes, but for now it's supposed to be a physical address.

Thanks for the link. I think that will be a problem because I don't feel comfortable with using my home address. I live in a mid-size community and I work as a nurse. Due to the types of patients we sometimes see in my specialty, our employer doesn't even list our last names on our ID badges for safety. I would hate to run into one of my patients at a craft fair who then buys a bar of soap and knows where I live. I also wouldn't want to have strangers possibly just showing up to my house, nor would I want the assumption that a stock pile of Sodium Hydroxide may be located at my address.

Something I'll have to give some thought to and maybe call or write the FDA for clarification and to find out if there are exemptions.

You are lucky about your employer and the last name! I refuse to put my last name on anything as it isn't that common. Now I work for an events company and they want our pix up online etc. I've been online since the beginning of time, if you know how to spell my name you can find me - but pix of my face? No thanks.

I did a google adwords campaign for a couple of years for my biz (not soap). It was attached to my addy and people still show up in front of my house sometimes, then call because they are confused because it's a house not a business.

I would definitely check and see if you can put an address on there. Here's another option and I don't know how costly it is. The town next to me has a building where businesses rent space. There is one person who answers the phone and takes messages for you. There are about 8 business names on the sign outside, yet in reality very few of them are there every day, it's just a place they can go to meet clients if necessary, and have a business phone number with a real person answering. No idea of the cost but it's got to be considerably less than having a whole place to yourself.

Do you have a company name? I believe I read that you do not have to list your home address on your labels IF you can be found in the phonebook under you business name.

yes that is what I was trying to say but I got interrupted and cut my post short. Meaning address in phonebook= no address on EVERY label. :D

Define phonebook though - I haven't used a paper phonebook for years! I do use online and mobile phonebooks though

LOL you have a point there. From what i read they mean a paper phone book ,but I suppose that would include a computer version of the white pages.

Thanks for that info! So there is hope that if I decide to make my hobby bigger I have other options. I have a proposed company name, but it's not official yet. I may run into problems with that too because it has the word remedy in it and I'm thinking it may sound too much like it's supposed to cure something. We'll see when and if I apply for it, trying to come up with an alternate name that I like just as much. I plan to see how well my stuff sells at my first craft fair to see if it is worth it to be official. :)
