Teach Soap

:O( EPIC FAIL , it curdled and smells bad. I mixed the Monkey Farts in after trace & after superfatting . I put 2 & 1/2 ounces of Monkey Farts fragrance oil. I tried to rebatch but it smells sour (SWEET) and it feels almost waxy .Think I might have to take a loss on this one :O( anyone have any ideas why this happened. My recipe :
1 oz almond oil
8 oz coconut oil
20 oz olive oil
8 oz palm oil
4 oz Shea butter
13 oz distilled water
5.55 oz lye
I added my lye when the temp was 115
My oils were 110
I want to try it again but I'm worried I will get the same results :O(

I ran your recipe through soapcalc and it looks fine. Your temps look good, too. Did you add all your oils up front or hold some back for superfatting? Or did you add another other to superfat?
Is the FO skin safe or is it a candle FO? 1 oz PPO is pretty heavy on the scent. Is it within the safe range for the FO? Did the FO come from a reputable vendor?
Did the soap overheat?
Sorry - I'm just throwing out questions hoping that something will help!

I added extra superfatting oils. I buy all my oils at the same place and yes this is suppose to be body safe. I am going to contact the company, I know I ordered body safe but the labeling does not say which it is. You brought up a good point , that's something I didn't think of. I believe they should have it listed on the label so no mistakes are made. Thank you :O)

Instead of adding so called superfatting oils at trace, add it all up front. Lye is still very active at trace and it will take whatever it wants. There is no guarantee that adding any oils or butters at trace will end up as your superfat. Calculate ALL your oils an butters right up front with a soap calculator. Depending where your fragrance came from, some do accelerate trace or can make your soap seize. I add my fragrance to the cooled off oils, not at trace.

Now I feel like I've been doing something wrong, as I always add the Fragrance @ trace. Is it better to add to the oils before even adding the oils to the lye? Thanks!

I started about a year ago just adding my oil for superfat to the oils before mixing the lye/water. I still add my FO at trace. I can't tell any difference on adding oill ahead of time. I wait on the FO so I will know what it is going to do.

Let me say this. I have tried adding 1 oz of FO per lb of oil on tried and true FO that I have used before and had disastoroius results. It would start thickening up so fast I could hardly get it in the mold. More is not always better I have learned. I never go over .7 anymore.

Don't discard the batch ....Monkey Farts can throw off a stange scent at first almost an aciddy pungent odor. Let it cure it will be fine, this is what I've discover when working with MF FO from BB.

I don't know if this would factor into all the problems I have been having. My last order for my coconut oil palm oil shea butter and all my fragrances oils were sent to me by UPS when it arrived the oils were frozen..... so the fragrance oils must have reached very cold temps. Would this effect my soap? I have made 5 batches from this order and only 2 worked out.
