So I was hoping to use old baby food jars to make candles. I was wondering if anyone knows if these containers are heat "safe" also can you color candle wax with micas? I was thinking of using a soy parrafin blend. How much fragrance oil would you need for votive size candle and do you know do they carry wicks at "big box" craft stores or do I need to order those online.

Since these jars are usually filled hot at the manufacturer's facility, I would think that's ok. I would not use mica for candles. It can clog your wick. Colors specifically made for candles is a better and safer option. The strength of fragrance oils vary. I would email the vendor and ask. For wicks, I would order them online and get their sampler pack. Different colors/fragrances affect the wick differently, so you will need to test and test some more, til you find the right wick. It's not as easy as people think and it can get $$.

I agree. Also keep in mind that some things are not designed to be used in candles and can let off fumes when burned. I believe that mica's are one of those things you do not want to breathe in.

Thanks ladies I love that I can ask you guys and feel confident with the replies. I actually saw mica on a candle site under colorants and though hmm I ave some so maybe I'll ask, and another ugh-oh avoided LOL. Thanks. I just got a coupe wicks from brambleberry with soy wax and I already have their scets and some of natures gardens scents so I'm hoping my experimenting comes to fruition since I make everything in fume hood I'm not too worried about any accidents the hood is heat proof too LOL. Thanks girls.

You're welcome. Be aware that citrus scents can give you a fuel smell when burning.

Well I tried and am very happy with my first creations though I learned alot. I had a little frosting but i think it was from letting them cool to fast on the bottom of the jar. The green wick isn't exactly centered and doesn't pool right but still works. Neither pool the whole jar so next time i'll use bigger wicks. All of which I feel is part of learning. Overall I count these as a sucess and can't wait to keep on creating. thanks everyone for our comments and support.
