"What is meant by double and triple scenting a candle?

The industry standard is considered 0.5 ounce of fragrance per pound of wax. For double-scenting, you would use 1 ounce of fragrance per pound of wax. For triple-scenting your candles you can use 1.5 ounces of fragrance per pound of wax. Make sure to confirm the wax you are using will hold that much fragrance. Some waxes are not designed to hold more than 1 ounce of fragrance per pound."

So my question is, if I am doing 5-6% fragrance loading (as stated on the wax's packaging that it can hold 5-6%), which I think works out to around 1oz per pound, is that more than stores do? What does it mean by "the industry standard"? Does that mean I can/should be advertising my candles as double scented?

The 0.5 oz per lb used to be the industry standard when there was basically one type wax; straight parrafin.

Todays waxes are varied for all the different applications people use to make candles now. Many are already custom blended with the additives so you don't have to bother with them. In addition, due to what wax or preblended wax you have the fragrance load can vary a lot from one wax to another.

So the industry standard of .5 oz really does not really apply to todays waxes and is obsolete. However there are some who still go by that yesteryear standard.

The double and triple scented claims are just that. Marketing ploys to sell candles. They are often misleading as your wax dictates how much fragrance load it will carry.

Besides, if someone is adding 1 1/2 oz of fragrance oil to their candles there are many other candlemakes who do the same and there are even super wax blends now that have a 2 oz fragrance load.

I find adding more fragrance than recommended is a waste of money. A lot of people think adding more is better but most often its not. Your candle isn't going to smell better with more fragrance. What makes a great smelling candle has a lot to do with how well its made, the right wick, the right additives, pouring, heating, etc. can all have a bearing on how well the candle burns and scents. Even the shape of the jar can have an effect.

Fragrance oil can be pricey too and using too much in your wax can also make it smoke or create sweating where the oil seeps out. I will never understand why anyone would want to waste money adding more fragrance than is needed. If you have a fragrance that doesn't work with your wax do your homework and testing and find one that does. It will save money down the road and make a better candle too.
