I have no equipment, no ingredients and no knowledge, so can someone kindly point me in the direction of where I should start first,
eg. books to read, easiest type of soap to start making for beginners, equipment needed etc.

I would like to be able to give soap as christmas prezzies, ,so have plenty of time to get it right by starting this early in the year.

Thanks in advance for any help given. I'm quite excited by the prospect of learning a new skill.

Welcome minxie!
I would suggest that you begin by going to TeachSoap.com, and start reading the questions, answers, and suggestions that are there. She, Ann Marie, the Soap Queen, owner of Brambleberry, offers step by step instructions, answers questions and gives recipes, as well as book suggestions there, on the Soap Queen blog, and on utube videos, listed under Soap Queen TV. Brambleberry even offers some of the books she suggests, if I recall correctly. Of course a quick Amazon search will net you them as well. She has done an excellent job of covering all aspects of soap making and I think you find more than enough information to keep you busy for quite some time!
Much luck, and again, welcome to the addiction!

Welcome!
I would also read Miller Soap site> http://www.millersoap.com/
For utensils or pots or stick blender, try your local thrift store. Make sure that the pot you get is stainless steel as anything else will react with lye.
