I'm wondering what the light white color is on the tops of some of my soap bars that are about 1 week into their curing process. I colored them green with chlorella so I can easily see the white appearing. This is something mentioned in The Soapmaker's Companion, but Susan Miller Cavitch doesn't have an explanation for it. Does anyone else? I cut off the white dusting layer when I first uncovered my soap, but it is now reappearing on some of it. Any suggestions?

Also, can someone tell me how to get that lovely bumpy top on my soap. It looks something like a topography map. Is it done using a mold? If so, can you suggest a place where I can find one?

Sounds like soda ash. It just adds that little "extra" to handmade soap. Just embrace it.

Thanks so much for your response. If this is soda ash, is there anything I can do to prevent it from appearing on future bars? Any idea why it only appears on the tops of the bars?
