Post subject: Brand New to Soaping :)

Recently I posted a question online asking for unique and inexpensive gift ideas for my family this Christmas. A couple of people told me to make homemade bath bombs. The more searching I did for the bath bomb recipes, the more I found about soaps! My problem is I am totally overwhelmed. I am very interested in the bath bombs and melt & pour soaping. I also would love to try candles eventually. I am legally blind, and I stay at home with my 2 young kids. I am desperate for a hobby that I can do, and I think I have definetly found it.
I am wondering, however, where the best place to start is. I would really like to start with the bath bombs, and see how that goes, and move on from there. There are just so many differnt options and recipes, I don't know where to start. Should I start with some sort of kit, or just buy my products seperately, and just start off with a couple of different fragrances, colors, and "oils"...
Thank you all for any advice!!!

Thanks Genny! I am very excited to get started! I am on a fixed budget, so I have been shopping around online to see where the best prices are. Do you have any advice about that? :)

If you're looking to start off with a kit, Brambleberry & Natures Garden Candles both have really great kits at decent prices.

Welcome, Smithpbridget! There are so many addictions to be fed here you'll be hooked on something in no time. Bathbombs sound like a good place for you to start. Lora gave some great links. I didn't bother with a kit because the ingredients are mostly inexpensive and easy to obtain. Brambleberry is a good place to look for citric acid, fragrance/essential oils, and mold(s) to get you started. The rest can be bought at WalMart. Have fun!

Hey Y'all (Yes, I'm from GA lol)
I just made my first bath bombs. I bought the kit from Michaels. I improvised a little bit by adding some of the sea salt to my mixture. I am very proud to say that they turned our pretty darn good, not too shabby for a "blind girl"! I am still letting them sit, so I haven't tried one yet. I am hoping that it will give a nice good fizz, but I am not sure that it will since I am in very high humidity! I have one question, for now:
Can I add shea or cocoa butter to a bath bomb? Or olive oil?
Thank you all so much for making me feel so welcome! I'll keep you posted on how the "fizzing" goes :)
I am going to try my M&P kit from Hobby Lobby sometime this weekend. I am trying to decide what I will be best at, and what I want to invest my funds in.

Congratulations on your first batch bombs. Yes, you can add cocoa butter, Shea butter, mango butter, etc as well as oils like olive, apricot kernel, avocado, etc to your bath bombs. The extra moisture sure helps dry skin. Start small and work your way up however as too much and they don't float or fizz well.

I'm so jealous I started by trying bath bombs too but mine came out warty. Second batch was worse than the first. Then I just admitted defeat and went straight into soaping. Someday I will give them another try. So many good ideas on this forum. Pretty soon you will have so many projects on your list your family will be getting gifts for Flag Day and National Walk you Dog Day and...

welcome to the forum.
