Teach Soap

Hi All-

I am new to this and I have a few questions that I am hoping some of you may be willing to answer. I first got interested in making my own soap when I became more aware of what I was actually putting on my skin. I thought it would be nice and fun to make my own, a new hobby! I haven't experimented much yet, but I plan on working with the M&P and already have a brainstorming list of what I would like to make. So excited!! I am hoping that maybe this will turn into a business for me as my husband and I are planning a family soon and I would like to be able to work from home and do something that I enjoy. I plan on debuting my creations for family and friends over the holidays hoping that this will give me a gauge of feedback. For those of you that do this as a business, is it a sustainable income? (Not asking for any actual numbers here, just wondering if it is comparable to working for someone else or another company) What did you find was the best way to get started? Any feedback would greatly appreciated and I look forward to being here! Thank you

First of all, WELCOME!
I started out just like you - a hobby that I wanted to make into a business. I started making soap and sold it in my small store ( not a soap store) and sold it wholesale to other stores and Hotels and did some craft fairs and small gift shows too. It took years of reinvesting my profits to buy Drums of oils - my Hubby even built me a soap factory! I did start making money finally and then I sold the business for a fair profit and moved about 3,000 miles.
Now I am trying to get another business up and running with some of my family. Am I crazy??? Probably. But the soap bug was itching me to start again.
Be prepared to have every surface in your house covered with your products! It can take over your life! But, yes you can make some money -but it may take a while, depending on how well you are at Marketing
( selling) your own products - to me - that's the hardest part. The soapmaking is the fun part!

Make a business plan. That's what I would do first. Would your DH be able to support you while you get your business off the ground?
If you have a baby your time will be at a premium.

It takes time, dedication and money along with sweat and sometimes tears. It is not easy working for yourself. Don't expect to be able to get days off if you have orders to fill. I haven't had a vacation in years. Don't expect to make a profit the first couple of years; at least.

I still love what I do and I've been making soap since 1969.
