Teach Soap

Maybe this is a strange question, but I was at a fair today and acquired some free St. Helen's ash. Do you think I could use it in soap? I was thinking it might be similar if not the same as bentonite clay.

Note, this ash has obviously not been approved by the FDA as cosmetic grade, it's just ash in a jar. It's super fine and extremely heavy! It's pretty amazing stuff, actually.

After doing some google searching I found this, which makes the idea more interesting.

I wouldn't. There could be some heavy metals in it. If you want to make it just for yourself fine, but I wouldn't sell it.

No, I wouldn't even consider selling it. It would be more like a science experiment.

After thinking about it, I'm sure the ash is more like pumice than clay. I've heard of people making mud masks out of it, but I'm not sure I'd want it on my face.

Maybe use it in a mechanic's type soap or foot scrub then if it's more like pumice?

Oooh, a foot scrub, now that sounds like a great idea!

It's a very fine powdery type substance, maybe even more fine than the pumice I've bought in the past for soap making.

Since I posted that link I found another that was an EHow article stating that yes, St. Helens ash is pumice and can be used the same as any other powder form of pumice - including use in bath & body products. Hurray! Once I have a moment to myself I'll have to try using it in a foot bar!

The fun part? I got it for free! A guy at a fair I went to had oodles of it in jars stacked in a pile with a sign that said, "Free! Yes, I really mean it!" lol

Cool! It's always great to get new soap stuff especially when it's free.
