The first batch I ever made of homemade soap was CP and I was hooked! At that point, I gave a cursory look at M&P, but the bases I looked at were not all-natural, so I assumed (wrongly!) that all M&P was more "synthetic" than CP.
Obviously, there are natural M&P bases and I am now wondering.....what makes soapers choose M&P over CP or the opposite way....why choose CP over M&P? I don't think I've ever used M&P soap, so don't have "real life" experience to compare it to.
Also, do most people who made soap just make one type (CP or M&P) or do they do a combo of both? And why?

I started out soaping by making MP. I enjoy the fact that it can be used as soon as it's made and does need to cure. I also like that there are just some crafty things that you can do with mp that you can't do with cp, like all the molds with intricate details. Plus there are very few fragrance oils that do badly in MP, whereas in CP the fo can ruin an entire batch of soap. Not to mention that I love the look of micas in MP soap, but in CP soap a lot of micas don't work :(

I also do CP. I like that I can decide the ingredients that I want to put in it and more defined swirlies in it than in MP. I also like that it doesn't sweat as bad as MP does, a lot of times it doesn't sweat at all.

I started with CP a long time ago. When MP became available, I added it to my line-up. I prefer and sell both.

When I started to get interested in soap making, I wanted to start with CP. However, I could not find lye locally, and the couple of times I made the mistake of asking for it in local stores, I was treated like a criminal! People who have known me all my life threatened to call the police because I was trying to purchase "bomb ingredients"! After a couple expriences like that, I didn't dare order it online, for fear of the FBI showing up on my doorstep! M&P seemed to be my answer. I still want to try CP, if I can get the nerve up to order some lye!

I do both and enjoy both equally for different reasons.

I did M&P for a short time, but I prefer making and using CP soap. The M&P bases almost always make my skin feel dry (even the BB ones, but no where near as bad as the craft store bases!)

Thank you to all who responded----it is very interesting to hear your thoughts and opinions!
I was contemplating attempting M&P, but am definitely not creative and like the simplicity of CP so was leaning toward sticking with just CP. And then I took a look at Coolah's latest blog post and she sealed the deal.......there's no way my place could house all of the supplies/materials/goodies that go along with M&P! While they do look enticing, I think it best to sit here and admire all of YOUR all's M&P creations!
Again, thanks for your insight :D

Haha! I also do quite a few other things. Plus I have a "must buy" problem and a complete lack of memory which is why I ended up having one oil come in from two different places.

I do MP mostly for my kids range. I like to hide little toys and such in the soaps, which adds to my clutter.

I have a 4yo and a 2yo and my soap cures in the laundry behind closed doors. :)

I picked M&P as my soaping medium because I'm afraid of lye in my home. I have dogs and twin 5 year olds who simply won't ever stay out of the kitchen, and believe me, I've tried! I know some people soap after their kids are in bed, but by then I'm beat and not in the mood.

I have to use mp soap because I can't work with lye. It's very dangerous for me.

Jellybeansoaps, that is just too funny, but very TRUE. I couldn't stop laughing when I read your message.
