Hello all,

New here. I've posted a couple topics in the Fragrances forum if anyone also wants to help me with some much needed answers there.

Regarding my background with M&P-- I got into M&P soap just a couple months as a complete newbie with the intention of making wedding favor soap. it got out of control and all in all I've probably spent around 500 on more molds, soap and fragrances...way too much considering I work about 50 hrs a week until I get a couple months break in about 3 weeks. I might try to get into selling some at that time, but as it is, I'm sitting on a bunch of soap stuff.

On to question-- I've colored, fragranced, molded, and re-melted countless soaps, due to dissatisfaction with the color, mold, outcome, etc.. I get a little OCD about it, but as my skill improves the need to remelt is happening less and less. How much soap am I actually wasting by doing this? What is the typical waste with M&P? I'm frustrated with the thin layers of soap from the sides of the glass heating containers I use (in the microwave) that get washed down the sink with each color or fragrance change, but I don't know what else to do about it.

Thanks!

Welcome!
There is some waste with MP. I try to work with smaller amounts, as multiple remelting tends to dry out the base. I go by weight, so there is very little in the cup once I'm done.

If you really want to save every little bit of left over soap, let the soap harden then scrape the sides of your container. Depending on the brand M&P base you use and how often you've reheated/reused it, you should be able to do this with a silicone spatula. I agree with Soapbuddy though, multiple remelts dry out the base and decreases the quality of your soap.

I save every scrap- from trimming loaves, to scraping the measuring cups after melting, leftover shreds or curls that didn't get used, etc. I melt all these down together and pour into a little tupperware mold and use it for myself. It usually is a GREAT soap as it has all the goodies from the different soaps all in one! I have a store, and buy CP soaps wholesale by the loaf and cut them myself to sell, so I save any scraps from cutting those and add them in the mish mash MP soaps. Works great!
