Hiya, I have a friend I really want to make some soap for, but she has a perfume allergy. I'm wondering what are some alternatives for scenting soap naturally? I've been looking at soaps with calendula. I was also thinking of ways to make the soap more interesting with exfoliants, layering, added butters, goats milk bases, etc.

She uses the Pears soap, so I've been comparing ingredients with that. What about adding teas? Or do they discolour?

On a side note, do people ever have reactions to
colourants?
Thanks :)

My son also has an allergy to certain perfumes and fragrances, but there are others he can tolerate. He has no problem with tea tree EO so I make him CP soap with tea tree oil. Is your friend allergic to all perfumes or is it something in specific types? If you can find out, it may help widen your choices of what to make. :P

That's what I was thinking. I'll ask her and see if she knows specifically. Thanks :)

Does your friend have skin allergies to perfume or...? I get migraines from some fragrances. I guess I'm allergic to heavy florals and manufactured perfume scents. I'm good with most EOs, fruity and more of the "creamy" fragrances though. I guess find out if it's skin or head or what your friend's reaction is and to which scents.

My mom started getting rashes from her two favorite perfumes, Poison and Beautiful. I made dupes of each one without cinnamon leaf (in jojoba oil instead of alcohol) and they work allergy-free for her. I hope that works!

We had a gal at Bramble Berry that was allergic to a colorant.... I think it was a FD&C color... yellow 5 maybe? Anyway, there were certain colorants and Lab Colors that she couldn't prepare or pour for orders. Also had to check her food to make sure that colorant wasn't used.

She hasn't gotten back to me yet, so I haven't updated on here in a bit. Thanks for all the tips :).

That's really interesting, Bramble Momma. I suppose you can be allergic to anything.

It's likely to be specific ingredients or scents.

I make one which contains vanilla, sandalwood, jasmine and neroli, which are all pretty good for sensitive skin, and it smells great. I also use some marshmallow oil in that, which is also really nice for sensitive skin.

Lavender can be a funny one... lots of people allergic to that. SLS is a classic ingredient for upsetting sensitive skin. Often it's the surfectants chosen in commercial soaps which can upset people.

I also use arrowroot powder instead of cornflower in bath bombs which are for sensitive skin, as it's much kinder. My best tip would be to google things you're interested in including or like the smell of and read the info. I have made a bit of an index for myself, with information on essential oils and their properties. One of the reason I like working with essential oils, is that I know what I'm putting in, whilst I don't know what someone else has put into their fragrance oil. That's the main reason I would stick to them for sensitive types. It's pretty easy to find information online about what oils do what, and are likely to upset people. If it's pollen that's an issue and sends them off in sneezes and splutters, you could try fruity scents, which are also fun and summery too.

Ironic that Pears soap actually has a fragrance. Make her a bastille; 95% olive with 5% castor.
