Teach Soap

So I just made my first M&P soap (from a store-bought soap base, not my own) and I utterly FAILED! It doesn't smell like any of the EOs I put in it and it doesn't lather. At all. I know that coconut oil provides lather, and clearly I didn't put enough scent in it (and I diluted the scent I did put in it in a carrier oil- apricot kernel).

So I'm going to try it again. Any suggestions? I ordered some coconut oil but I probably won't get it til weds or thurs and I really want to try again. Also, for the purpose of experimenting with scents, can I grate & melt slivers of oil of olay soap and add the scents? Is that an effective way to experiment? Or should I just stick with my plain store bought soapies? Thanks!

You shouldn't add too much coconut oil to an MP base. It will kill the lather. Store bought bases are lower quality than the ones you can get from BB. I would suggest trying another base. Use the fragrance calculator at to figure out how much you can use per how many pounds of soap you are making. Hopefully this helps a bit.

Coconut oil is not needed in MP base, that's why you're getting no lather. This only work for cold process soap. Get yourself a better quality base like BrambleBerry base. Don't dilute the fragrance oil. that's not needed either. For 4 ozs. of soap, you would need approximately 20 drops of essential or fragrance oil.
